The Order of Merit was instituted in Chile by the Ministry of War on September 14, 1906 as the Medal of Merit to recognize military instructors from all nations. In 1911, the Medal was divided into three grades to recognize different ranks of the recipients. In 1929, the Medal was promoted to order. It is currently awarded to foreign civilians in recognition of meritorious services to Chile.
