It was awarded to civilians that had showed exceptional zeal in the trade, production and social fields, as well as to military personnel for zealous service; in two grades: Gold and Silver.
The obverse of this medal translates to “BY THE GRACE OF GOD ALEXANDER III EMPEROR AND AUTOCRAT OF ALL RUSSIAS” and the reverse translates to “FOR ZEAL”.

Alexander III (10 March 1845 – 1 November 1894) was Emperor of Russia, King of Congress Poland and Grand Duke of Finland from 13 March 1881 until his death in 1894. He was highly reactionary in domestic affairs and reversed some of the liberal reforms of his father, Alexander II.
