Guards Leutenent Vasiliy Filippovich Zinchuk
a Ukrainian-born veteran of the Great Patriotic War. He served from March 1941 until July 1945 in the 333rd Guards Rifle Regiment of the 117th Guards Rifle Division and held the position of Rifle Company Commander. The action described took place during the Soviet advance into Germany in early 1945, when the crossing of the Oder River was one of the key operations preceding the final assault on Berlin.
Description of the Combat Feat
During the crossing of the Oder River, Comrade Zinchuk demonstrated exemplary heroism, discipline, and organizational ability.
Having received the mission to cross the Oder River, seize a bridgehead in the crossing area, and hold it until the battalion arrived, he carried out the task despite intense enemy fire.
Disregarding the danger to his life and under heavy enemy fire, he crossed the river with his company, drove the enemy from the crossing area, and held the bridgehead until the main forces of the battalion crossed.
During this action, he repelled five enemy counterattacks.
He is worthy of the government award, the Order of Alexander Nevsky.
The Soviet Order of Alexander Nevsky was a military decoration established in 1942 by the Soviet Union to honor commanders who demonstrated courage and contributed to the success of their units during World War II. The order was named after Saint Alexander Nevsky (1220–1263).
The order was awarded to commanders of all ranks, from platoons to divisions. The star of the order was worn on the right breast, and the ribbon was bluish-white with a red central stripe. In addition, 1,470 military units were allowed to display the order on their banners, and about 70 foreign generals and officers were also awarded the order.
