The 16th Guards Rifle Karachevskaya Order of Lenin Red Banner Order of Suvorov Division was formed on July 6, 1941 in Zagorsk near Moscow as the 249th Rifle Division. Its fighters were participating in the Battle of Moscow, showed courage in the battles for the cities of Velizh, Rzhev and Karachev. During the assault on Koenigsberg, the division was the first to cross the Pregel River and cut off the enemy’s escape route.
